You would be better off using food grade or food safe some chemical leachs into the plastic and cant be washed out, Try local water treatment plants they use some safe ibc tanks also preson or large jail and some hospitals use food safe totes.

Just getting started purchased a 10x12 harbor freight green house and looking for a couple of good used IBC totes in my area I am in Illinois just west of rt 1 and rt 33 junction. Can you clean out any IBC and let sun bleach and use them or do they need to be food grade? Would like to start with 300 gal tank and a couple grow beds.

Thanks for any help or info and if anyone in my area let me know

I am looking for a couple of 275 gallon, food grade, IBC totes in the Central Louisiana area.  I would be thrilled if anyone could point me in the right direction.  I have tried Craig's list and no luck.  Thanks in advance for any help!

We've got a used 275g PE tank, a 100 gallon tank that can be used as a grow bed or a sump tank, and a 50 gallon grow bed (cracked and repaired) all on clearance at our Boulder, CO location.  Cash and carry.  Check here for the listing and images - http://theaquaponicsource.com/aquaponics-clearance-sale-items/

That whole 300 gallon system is for sale to anyone who can show up at my place with an all terrain fork lift and flat bed.  $5000 if you contact me before we rent equipment to move it.

Zahid,

I'm not sure which in ground tank but I'm guessing you mean the 300 gallon system, that tank is a 300 gallon rubbermaid stock tank from tractor supply.  They cost somewhere around $210 I think.  They are only 24 inches deep so a little on the shallow side but they are good.  I personally like to use at least a 1:1 ratio of grow bed to fish tank but on my system I have 600 gallons of grow bed (6 100 gallon beds) for that 300 gallons of fish tank using an indexing valve (1 1/4" gravity modified) and a 1000 gph pump.

TC, I just saw the video of your 'in ground' tank, I love it. I was wondering if you could tell me where to get something like that and what I need (pump size, # of growbeds etc) to maintain it.

Wow, thanks for the great advice! I just picked up a couple of IBC's, now to get on with the rest of the stuff.

Comb craigs list for people who sell IBC's (especially the ones who can tell you exactly what they contained before.)

But when looking for sturdy grow beds, not much can beat rubbermaid stock tanks from tractor supply unless you come across a "Free source of acceptable barrels or super cheap but safe and not cracking IBC's"

Good Luck.  You might also try looking at the member map and seeing who lives around your area and pick their brains to see if any of them have found good sources for different materials.

Sorry I was unclear..... I am looking for locals with second hand stuff to sell. The reason is because of our limited funds. We are trying to do more DIY's but ready affordable stuff would be great maybe better.

Comment by TCLynx on July 3, 2012 at 12:16pm

Zahid, are you looking for some one local with second hand stuff to sell?  Or are you asking for links to businesses that sell complete systems and ship them to you?

Comment by zahid on July 3, 2012 at 10:48am

HI all,

I am just starting up in aquaponics. We need "everything" but it has been difficult finding equipment (mostly second hand due to funds) for sale in Maryland (I live in Baltimore). If there is anyone who has large setups for sale pleeeeese let me know.

I have:

a commercial fry grow out tank  and pedestals ($300)

fingerling grading and sorting baskets and frame ($250)

a protein skimmer (one vertical broken and fixed) ($100)

bead filter (rated to about 1800 gallons) ($600)

fluidized bed filters and fluidized bed filter media,  ($75 each with media)

various commercial Hayward valves (1" through 4") ($20 up)

honeycomb biological media for settlement tanks, 2 sizes: coarse and fine ($150 for all of it)

a UV clarifier (great for system startups and treating algae blooms and fish disease) with several bulbs and crystal shrouds  ($350 for everything)

I'll piece it out or if you let me know soon I'll sell it all in a single lot for $1600.  You'll have to pick it all up, or I can deliver it as far as the Denver area (I'm in Laramie, Wy) for gas money.  If interested, email me at nate@brightagrotech.com
