living in downtown Sacramento. Current set-up is mainly a "raft" system (a la Glenn Martinez's "trayponics" design) in 10' x 12' greenhouse. Planning on getting trout fingerlings 11/2012...
thanks for the coment sending me to your group but i have been reading it for the last week or so before i signed up for the forum! i found your group before i found the forum website! i searched sacramento aquaponics looking for some thing similar to growing power or green acres aquaponics but sacramento does not have any thing like that. but one day i hope!
Thanks Paul. Right now things are day to day living but the outlook is still good. I am super interested the Tilapia debate in Northern California, and what that will mean for the Aquaponic Community. Thanks so much for your work and your posts.
Paul, thanks for letting me know about this tour. I am just back from a trip to Hawaii where I checked out three " commercial " aquaponics farms--only one is actually currently selling produce. Unfortunately, though, i have plans for that day. please keep me in mind for future tours, and/or to discuss what I have learned from in-depth discussions with the owners.
Hey Paul, thanks for the welcome, and advice. Looking to get together with other local, like minded individuals, and bounce ideas around, compare, and maybe tour some other systems. I've been up and running for about 6 months now. Cycled on feeder goldfish, which are all huge now. Pure strain Blue Tilapia fingerlings went into the main tank about a month ago, and have already quadrupled in size. Pretty heavily planted right now (I'm impatient), but, as a result, my nitrates are non existant. I need more fish poop, or bigger fish, lol. Just added 15 small koi to one of my sumps trying to bump my numbers. I know as things get more established, and fish grow out, I will get that explosion of growth and production that I'm looking for. Just set up a seperate breeding tank for the Tilapia, because I refuse to purchase fingerlings ever again.
Thanks for the welcome. I am looking forward to this forum and group. I am actually excited in building one for my family. I really like the concept. I am hoping to build one in a few months. Rattana
Paul, thanks for the welcome - a true ambassador for the area. I see previous comments regarding a local tour. I began my aquaponics experimentation earlier this year in North Carolina, but had to abandon the small set-up once I moved to CA. I still have the hardware (pump, timer, bulkhead fittings) and a little experience :) I would like to meet with others in the area. Is there a meeting or something like that in the area?
It's awesome you get to go to Wisconsin (must have found some suprise in the cookie jar, ey?. Hve a great time and any chance there will be a tour of the GH once all is well?
Just figured out why for months I haven't been getting emails from this site announcing discussions or replies in groups I'm in here: they were all going to spam folder! Got that fixed now and looking forward to being in more frequent contact with everyone as a result!
Thank you for the comment! Yeah, we have been building these small porch gardens so that we can get everyone around us involved and eventually it turned into a small business. Good stuff ahead.
Hi Paul, it's Bridget up in Grass Valley. I wanted to let you know to pass the word about the Sustainable Food & Farm Conference this weekend in Grass Valley. Will Allen & Joel Salatin will be the keynote speakers. Also, Sunday Pierre Beauchamp (a 17 year old national award winner for Aquaponics) will be doing an Aquaponics workshop. www.foodandfarmconference.com
Hi Paul, just saw your post - thanks. I tried to post yesterday & the night before & it kept coming back at me as errors. Sorry you can't make it! Bridget
Hey there. You asked which "Fallbrook" I was from and I am actually in Southern California in San Diego county or else I would look into the Sacramento group. But there are really good resources on this site for everyone. Thanks for the welcome.
Thanks for reaching out. I'm going to be out of town this weekend for the Rugby 7s in Vegas, so I can't meet up. I already have the 2/23 meetup on my calendar and can't wait. After this weekend, definitley let know if you're ever in my area!
Thanks, I joined. My son and I are getting ready to build 2 systems. Both with 150 gallon fish tanks and 2 - 40 gallon beds. Does that sound OK? What is the best fish for our weather? Where do I get the fish? How many fish should I get?
Thanks for adding me. I';d be interested in more info on the EGHS AP system. I'm going into the second weekend of setting my system up. I bought three IBC Totes for $80 each. Two will be for fish, and the third I cut in two for grow beds. I am also going to run 4" PVC pipes,m which I will cut 2-3" holes into for inserting grow cups. Overhead will be a trellis. Do you know of a good local supplier of fingerling fish?
Hey Paul! I've started my own aquaponic business here in Rocklin :) Here is a link to my website : alphaponics.weebly.com
Happy to help with the State Fair. My email and phone number is on the website. Also interest in becoming an Aquaponics Association member.
So far I have not yet begun my system. I am looking at doing an IBC based system in a greenhouse. I still have to do a lot of work to get everything ready - run electrical lines, figure out cooling/heating system, etc....Realy, what I have been doing is research until I have the extra funds to begin buying the components I need.
Hello! thanks for the welcome Paul. Glad I found you guys i had no idea there are so many aquaponicers* in the area. Many of the different topics in the discussion forum have already helped me a bunch....i just got my system going yesterday and am excited to share, i will post pictures soon, thanks again!
Bought a shelving unit to hold my current 55 gal tank high enough for display and to have a sump below with grow beds on the side. Also got my gb containers and a 37gal tub for a sump tank. Going to set this up inside.
If I have my gb's in front of my sliding glass door, would this be enough light for broccoli, herbs, potatoes, mushrooms, peas, and maybe strawberries? Or would I need to buy ballasts? I'd prefer to set this up with least energy draw as I can.
Thank you so much Paul. I am so happy to know that there are others in the area who are doing aquaponics. I hope that I can get a system set up soon. I am debating about buying an out of the box system vs. building my own from scratch. I already have some components that I think will work for a stick built system but need to learn a little more about it. I am really struggling with how to heat and cool a system. I hope this venue will help me decide what to do. If anyone has any input regarding the best way to go, I'm all ears! In the meantime, I am going to explore this site! Thanks!
Hi Paul,
Thank you so much for your email. I just add myself to the Sacremento group. I'm starting to learn about the aquaponic system, and information here is very helpful... :D
Right now I'm at the stage of "OMG! I'll never figure out all these possibilities!" And like another post I read, mine has to fly by a very conventional Dad (95), while the kid (66) has to get all her ducks in a row before proposing the project. And money really IS an object unfortunately.
I'd love to connect w/ the gal in Sac since I'm so close in Chico. Once I get a little better grip I'm sure I'll be posting lot's of questions. Also plan on lot's of photo documentation.
Thanks Paul. In the research phase righ tnow. I have some wicking beds in the garden and will be building a greenhouse for the aquaponics in the future.
Thanks Paul. What is the name of the company that had the green building plans located in Orlando Fl.? Actually right out side of Orlando. They were having something in Nov. I cannot find the flyer

No, I do not tend to do fairs ... just too expensive.
It's more that it kind of engages a few of my main passions that I follow with a few hobbies into one thing, which I find fascinating.
I've been toeing around aquaponics for a while now, but didn't realize there were other folks in my area that might be interested in the same thing.
