Hi Mike,

it kind of depends on how many you want to keep. I used to use a tumbler like the one at this post.

Now, since I feel them like 3-5 times per day anyway, I just wait for them to hatch and swim out of the mom's mouth. Then, before the adults have a chance to eat the babies, I either move the adults to a new aquarium or get a fine mesh net and move the babies. You probably don't have to be that quick but as soon as I see babies swimming around I do the move.

When I didn't want babies and the fish still got pregnant, I just left them. 2-6 would normally survive the adult gauntlet.

So it kind of depends on how many babies you want.

Later,

David

PS: I think there's a Tilapia Breeding group on this page.

I got all the other fish out except the pregnant one. it turned out to be just one was expecting.

When you say "get those eggs out of the mouths now" what do I do with them?

Get the 2nd male of of there asap ... I mean right now!

The females will drop their eggs with in 7 to 10 days.  Look at a YouTube Tilapia egg harvesting video and GET THOSE EGGS OUT OF THE MOUTHS NOW!

After you get the 2nd male out of the tank the others will likely brood.

While we weren't trying to breed them but hoping they would on their own, I just noticed that 2 of my females have bulging mouths, i for sure seen eggs in 1 of their mouths.

1st: How long till they release their eggs?

2nd: I have 4 females & 2 males in the same tank, if I try to remove the un brooding ones, will the others spit out their eggs?

3rd: best recommendation for my situation please?

thank you in advance for your help.

I am a licensed tilapia breeder/shipper in WA.  I am licensed to ship anywhere.  I am not a policing agency and not barred from shipping anywhere by Washington law.  You want tilapia I will provide them at a reasonable market price..

Thanks, glad to be here! I'm in Northern California where tilapia are regulated by Dept of fish and wildlife. Many raise them anyway. Currently my systems are all on standby, but hoping to have something running again by spring. Here to learn all I can!

Good deal Chris.  I will be selling Egg Hatchery Tumblers.  I will post info on them soon.

We just built 10 and they were gone locally before I could crow about them.  Right now I have about 1500 eggs in a hatchery.

Im in Boise growing Blue niles in my greenhouse 800 gal in 3 tanks, ive done fine with a 1kw heater in my growout tank on a timer until i sit down and build a controller then planning 2 solar heaters, have the parts just need to build them. Ive moved one breeding colony in the house and several females are carrying eggs so I should have fry at new years, moving a second colony in tomorrow.
