Help everyone, I live in the Virginia Beach area and would like to meet some folks who are into aquaponics. I do not have a system partially because I move around a bit. I have though been interested for a few years and want to gain hands on experience.
With that said it seems to me that the mid-atlantic aquaponics group is here in this area of VA??? Not sure though.
I looked forward to meeting some of you and building my knowledge base.

Hi Phil,

I am not getting into it as large as you seem to want to. 

I have a 14' L x 8' W x 22' H totally indoor room that was originally going to be setup as an indoor Arboretum for citrus trees.  Since looking into Aquaponics the plan has changed to more of a food generating source.  I have a theater room I am building below this that is adjacent to a star case that goes up to the floor above.  I plan on placing my fish tanks under the stairs so it can be scene from the theater room.  Because of the size and curvature of the room under the stairs I am going to have to have a tiered tank system (larger on bottom and smaller as it goes up). The lower tank will have Red Claw Crayfish and I am undecided on the other tanks.  I have been down to The Science Museum in Roanoke in the Butterfly exhibit.  I think that is the way to go in having butterfly's  do my pollinating for me.  I understand there is a nice Aquaponics setup in Richmond.  Another road trip to make before spring.

Hi Everybody,

My name is Philip Hosler and I am interested in getting an aquaponics project going in Harrisonburg Va.  I am envisioning an aquaponics greenhouse that sells to a local summer camp as well as to the local public schools providing quality food as well as education opportunities.  I am still in the proposal stage and I am wanting to visit some semi-local aquaponic projects, volunteering for a few hours - a few days, so that I can gain an understanding of how they are going about their project and to learn from their direct experience.  If anybody in this group has or knows of a project, I would be very interested in some contact information.

My name is Craig Shevlin,

I am in Moneta, VA between Lynchburg and Roanoke at Smith Mountain Lake.  I built my house with an interior Arboretum  (no outside walls, only a roof), for the sole purpose of having a room to grow my citrus trees.  But now I am interested in doing Aquaponics.  Has anyone built an indoor Aquaponics room indoors? I have a 14' X 8' X 22'H indoor arboretum with 4 skylights above.  About to add 5 additional 14" round sun-tubes to the ceiling from a south facing roof.  Below this room I plan on putting in an aquarium with freshwater red claw crayfish and shad (food for the crayfish).  All comments and suggestions welcomed.  CraigSS@live.com

Hello Mid-Atlantic neighbors!

My husband and I are in the beginning stages of our aquaponics adventure in Hagerstown, MD. We are complete newbies, but like most things we are hopping in feet first. We just bought a 14 X 40 hoop house and a flood/drain system that has about 95 goldfish in a 100 gal +/- water, with about 6 grow beds.  We purchased the system from a guy who had it listed on Craigslist. We disassembled the system at his place, loaded almost all of it (left the gravel media due to our utility trailer capacity) and now are in the process of reassembling/rebuilding at our place!

We have purchased (again from a Craiglist posting) a 55 gallon aquarium which is housing our fish until we can get everything put together.

We are excited, I am feeling a little intimidated - but I think that will pass once we get everything set up. I am sure I will have lots of questions and I am happy for any offered advice....

Greetings to all,

This past August it was decision time .... do I go Aquaponics or Hydropomnics? Much thought and analysis went into making the decision. 

Zoning requirements in my township somewhat mandated size and location of my hoophoouse on my property. My hoophouse is 12'x24' and is single skinned and without heat. The cost of implementing a heating system, plus adding a second skin to decrease heating cost would have added a strain on my finances and would have delayed implementation for another season.

 The systems I have installed were two flood and drain stone media beds, comprising three barrels in each system supported by 55 gallon reservoirs, plus a twenty-four dutch pot system supported by a 100 gallon reservoir. 

Subsequently I have come to the conclusion that I will begin replacing the flood and drain systems with deep water culture beds. The produce grown in a DWC system will be cleaner and easier to harvest.

Having three reservoirs that when in operation drain the reservoirs down to fifteen to twenty percent capacity, along with twenty degree weather that we enjoyed in January was not what I would call a very good environment for raising any kind of fish.

Therefore my decision was to forgo Aquaponics and work with Hydroponics. The more I look into the operational nuances the more comfortable I became with my decision. Late June and early July will see temperatures hovering into the ninety degree range and tomatoes will be sucking up water very quickly. This would also put a strain on fish, and that would require an additional investment in equipment to cool the reservoirs. Not a practical investment since a 55 gallon reservoir would require an expenditure of about $945 for a water chiller plus an operational expense to run over 500 watts of juice.
