Well pH swings are actually far more problematic when you don't realize they are happening.  Like the person who doesn't realize that the pH readings of 8.4 they are always getting (because they always test in the late afternoon/early evening) are due to algae and their constantly adding acid but it doesn't seem to be working can cause issues.

But I'm not really certain that a .8 swing in pH is really such a good thing since when you are adjusting pH you are generally told never to move it more than .2 per day.  Now if some one is running a greenwater system and it is working well, I won't argue with something that is working.  So far I've not experienced a system that was doing well while also experiencing large pH swings.  When I was having an issues with brown string algae I was seeing the pH swing from 8.2-7.4 and this didn't crash my system or anything but I decided it would be better to shade out the algae.

Carbonic acid is a very weak acid, but sure it's possible that it swings your pH substantially. So, what kind of pH swing are you warning against? If my pH went from 7.1 to 6.3 and back on a daily basis I would be quite happy about that. It allows a range of nutrients to become more available at different times allowing the plants to be healthier, and it has a host of other benefits. For the bacteria AND fish. Please be a little more specific as people should not be scared of pH swings for no reason. Yes it can be a bad thing, but it can also be a good thing.

Some small amount of surface algae usually isn't a problem.  It is the whole pea soup green water thing that is usually a big problem in aquaponics.

However, to know if the algae is affecting your system do a pH test at dawn and then do another pH test in late afternoon.  If there is a wide difference in pH then the algae is affecting your system.  See algae will use up dissolved oxygen over night and give off carbon Dioxide which will lower pH.  Through the day the algae will use up the dissolved carbon dioxide and give up dissolved oxygen and the pH of the water will rise through the day.

Hi all I was wanting to know how bad is algee for your system.  I have it growing and have covered as much of my tanks as I can.  I still have it growing in my towers any place that gets wet like were the water comes out of them.  Will the algee harm my vegges.  I have plenty of air in my water.  Thanks Harrison

If I could wave the proverbial magic wand and make our food regulation system better, it would be done in a Sociocratic manner.  That way it would be self regulating.

Please don't misunderstand me.  I'm not suggesting the abolition of regulation, on the contrary, I'm advocating making it better and more reasonable.  Without which I'm afraid that we are going to be thwarted in our efforts to feed ourselves.  IMHO regulation is necessary, but shouldn't be made evil.
