Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

I'm trying to write a business plan for a commercial aquaponics "farm", but writing such a document is not really within my skill set, and I'm having trouble finding a good template to start from. Does anybody have such a business plan or template? Don't worry, I'm in Texas, so I won't be competition for you if you're elsewhere. :-)

I'd love to take a look at this as well, I'm just wondering what a calculated opportunity cost from such a system would be.

I am happy to send you our business plan, written in 2007, which got us a $100k loan from our local credit union...I'm not sure how applicable it will be, but you're welcome to it.

Hello everyone, I am currently looking for an example of a commercial aquaponics business plan. If anyone has one would they care to share?  Thanks!

Aloha Troy This is Tim from Friendly Aquaponics in Hawaii. I'd be happy to send you an electronic copy of the current (very simple) spreadsheet we're using to track consumables costs against income from our farm if you send me your email address. We're developing a much more sophisticated SS that will track employee costs, overhead, depreciation, cost of money, and ROI, as soon as we have time. We cover this and a bunch more stuff about the business side of aquaponics in our twice-yearly trainings (NOT an ad, just a statement); and we will do anything we can to help people get started and be successful in commercial aquaponics without having to go through the same learning curve we went through. There's also a bunch of free aquaponics how-to stuff on our website at (http://www.friendlyaquaponics.com/free-diy-stuff/free-downloads/), and we give away our $995 DIY commercial package AND our $1,500 Commercial Aquaponics Group Training to NGO's, churches, and bonafide non-profits for $100 for printing and mailing costs on this page (http://www.friendlyaquaponics.com/free-diy-stuff/free-diy-systems/).

i highly recommend spending the 1,000 - 1,500 on a class or booklet that includes the plan, system designs, parts lists, sources, etc.    its well worth the money.. will save you tens of thousands down the road.

with a few to choose from, its just a google search for commercial ap training.

cheers.

As far as commercial courses go, I'd definitely recommend the Green Acres Commercial Aquaponics course.

I am hopefully going to be taking the one at Green Acres coming up in April but just trying to get a business plan before that time

its been said before.. and the longer i do this, the more i agree with this statement.. and offer it just as something to think about before you get in too deep... the gentleman said to me...

"If you dont know the answer to the questions necessary to create a business plan, then you most likely dont know enough about that business to be successful"

i will add this.. im my opinion.. farming is about 90% marketing .. we dont get paid for growing plants, they have to be presentable, and well packaged/kept, and fresh. ..how do you plan to get rid of the products you plan to grow?

if you can answer that question, the only real question is.. Do you have about $60-100k to get started, and can you live without an income for about 16mos, while you get things dialed in?

Thank you for your advice.  Yes we have considered all of those and I am certain we still have tons to learn.  We are going to start small hopefully making enough food to support feeding the 11 families housed at our non profit "The Circle of Veterans" www.thecircleofveterans.org then gradually adding on to eventually have a large commercial farm.  I saw the post from Friendly Aquaponcs so generously lending there business plan, so I thought I would ask.  But they have not responded

Aloha All

Please note the (2) business plans attached to this email, one is the original that our credit union loaned us $100,000 on, the second was written by a California student of ours.

Also, we've included our "Aquaponic Tools Projection Spreadsheet" for those "numbers people" among you to play with. These kinds of comprehensive tools would have helped us a lot when we began 7 years ago, and we're happy to make them available to anyone wishing to start a commercial aquaponics operation now.

Feel free to use these, and forward them to others for their personal use. Please give credit where it's due; ie, don't be silly and claim you authored them yourself.
