A SIMPLE PERMACULTURE SELF STEERED AQUA POOL SYSTEM,TRANSITIONING TO A MANAGE ONE?

Hello group!

Its good to be able to relate to this site,to learn and share. I was asked on the sign up and also by TCLYNX what type of Aqaponic system I had.And when the question was asked,my answer was no system, because I only thought then of the typical systems that most Aquaponic gardening members have, and not a natural self steering one that I have.I am headed to the more managed system for indoors, and adding grow beds to the outdoors one's for increased food production. So I would like to show you where I am.

Currently here at Gaia permaculture I'm developing various "turkey nest" fish pools on a down hill slope(20% ).There are 4 pools in total, and around these are various garden polyculture niches of many heirloom vegetables/nitrogen fixing Eleagnus small trees, grapes, peach on the edges. Amaranth and Lambquarters is people and fish food.Mints on back side of damn from wicking  action.Day lilies and plums in the mix also.

The pool that is water filled is approx 16X18 and 4feet deep. There is a hidden drain, but the over flow water is allowed to flow up to leach through the carpet underneath the straw on top of the damn;where various seeds are thrown to seek their niche. Must be holding my mouth right(smile...because this pool has been stabilizing for about 1 1/2 year, and there are many many fish(Bullheads,Mosquito fish,Bream.and not to count Bull frogs. In fact two sets of a hundred are so bullhead fingerlings has been born here.Image 2519.....I am only now constructing a filter for this system, and NO fish lost! The Typha plants helps some with the filtration. The one thing I'm aiming for is to get greater food production in this area of the homestead by using grow beds in sync with the pools. It has already had Muscovy ducks integrated into this perma system, which helped it tremendously.Photo 2516 shows the duck platform over the pool, and me and my potter making friend couple visiting for gathering mosquito fish.I give food to the fish on a very irregular basis.I've included a few downhill shots towards the Bio-shelter,where a created wet land is planned below the pools....When I begin to hook up to a Aqua bed system I'll keep everyone posted............Peace".."Dee

Cool.  You say "turkey nest" fish pools, is there additional meaning to the term or is that just what you are calling the pools for your own purposes?

How are your pools made?  Did you line them?

Oh and it is possible to insert the images directly in the posts if you like by using the second icon along the top of the post box.

Tclynx,I tried to post photos the way that you described, but the program would not respond, and in fact locked my computer up for a moment for what ever the reason.

But mon the liner to the pool is one that was discarded, and the under layment is of discarded carpet. The next ones will be lined with just the typical 4 to 6 mil pvc, that will be sandwiched between old carpet. The white pool liner can be seen in image 2515.

The term "Turkey Nest " is a permaculture term, and is referring to the shape of the pools compared to that of a turkey's rounded nest. Take care, and Peace...."Dee
