Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

Recently we visited Osa Mountain Village in Costa Rica where they have Aquaponic and Hydroponic operations.  While being shown some of the greenhouses, it was mentioned that a particular type of mold was being encouraged to grow on the plants because it would kill insect pests.  I am unfamiliar with such a thing and would like to learn more about it.  Some questions that come to mind are...

  • What is the name of the mold?
  • How effective is it?
  • What are the advantages and disadvantages?

I've never heard of this before.  What did it look like?

I'm interested in more info too.

We did not see anything that looked like a "mold" growing on the plants.

The young man, Chris, who was telling us about it spoke very good English and was quite clear and emphatic about it.  He said that the humidity was being kept high for the mold.  The greenhouse had double doors as like an "air lock" arrangement for that purpose.
