Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

Greetings all!

I am a US Peace Corps volunteer assigned to the Westmoreland Organic Farmer's Society in beautiful Bluefields Bay!  I know, pretty much the Peace Corps jackpot.

WOFS received money from USAID to construct a commercial aquaponics unit.

  • Nine 26x3.5 ft grow beds with gravel
  • five 600 gallon tanks
  • bug netting on the sides and shade netting on top
  • pvc pipes
  • all solar powered

Construction finished in March 2014, I arrived in May, and now we're trying to make the thing productive.  We've had good success with Basil so far, but can't get cilantro to grow properly.  Markets isn't a big issue, resorts and hotels are lining up for local, organic, herbs and veggies, but production is.

Anywho, I'll be hopping around these forums trying to learn as much as I can.

Cheers,

Pete T

Hi Pete. Welcome to the Aquaponics community.

What do you mean when you say "Can't get cilantro to grow properly"? What's wrong with it?

The first beds we planted did okay, but the water level in the gravel beds wasn't high enough consistently, so we only saw growth in the spots directly under spouts.  This recent attempt USAID admitted that the seeds we were given were no good, as none of the units they monitor were successful.

So now we have to wait until we can source some more cilantro seeds.
