Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

I don't know if this is the cause, but I recently added a small bag of dried, crushed eggshells to my aquaponic system, and now my pH dropped to 6.5. Same thing happened in my rain barrel when I added eggshells....

Now, eggshells are supposed to eventually raise my pH, right? Is there some kind of initial reaction that might cause my pH to lower at first?

I mean, it could be totally unrelated, but it's the only thing I've done differently. Maybe my carbonate buffer just ran low....

Alex, I'd look for another event...like adding rain water (or some other thing) as it seems unlikely that the shells were the cause...

Thanks, just wanted to be sure :)

Tested my KH levels and, sure enough, 0. Which means that my aquaponic system has finally used up the buffer naturally contained in my well water :)

now what?

Well, the eggshells have balanced everything out for now. I'll either buffer up with some bicarbonates or add some more of our well water.
