Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

Hi everyone. I read somewhere that Sacramento had changed their permit requirments for small greenhouses. My county does not require a permit for a shade structure but does not include a greenhouse in this permit exemption. Can someone help me find the verbage so that I can submit to our Board of Supervisors a change in our ordinance/ Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

An amendment to the Code by the County or City will be required.

Here is the City of Sacramentos criteria from their web site. Every City and County varies but they always seem to reference California Building Code 105.2 and then they amend that section as they seem reasonable.

In some cases, a permit is not necessary.  Unless within a design review or preservation district (or a historic landmark), a building permit is not required for:

  • One story detached accessory buildings used as tool and storage sheds, playhouses, etc., providing the floor area does not exceed 120 square feet.
  • Fences, other than masonry walls, less than six feet in height.
  • Retaining walls not over four feet in height measured from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall, unless supporting a surcharge.
  • Platforms, walkways, and driveways not more than 30 inches above grade and not over any basement or story below.
  • Painting, papering, and similar finish work.
Got a reply from City of Sacramento Ezpermit email

Subject: Greenhouse permitting

Good day,
I am wondering if you could provide me with some information regarding small greenhouse construction and permitting. I have read somewhere that Sacramento changed their permit requirments and now allows small greenhouse construction, similar to the shade structure exemption requirement. I would like to approach my Board of Supervisors with a similar proposal. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Ken McCown
