just wondering how long it usually takes to get through the nitrite spike.  I have done some major water changes but seems to have no effect, and I am losing fish every day.

Do you still have detectable ammonia? It also depends on environmental issues like temp and water flow,  but you should start seeing some nitrates within a week. Also stop feeding your fish. They don't need to eat for a week or more.

ammonia is down to 0, water flow is good, large temp swings for the last month, stopped feeding 5 days ago.  thanks for the reply.   maybe I'll figure how to work this site before long.
