Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

I have scrounged parts from around the house and have started a small aquaponics system.  Everything is ready for fish but I have one problem.  Everywhere I read says 12" of media.  Now I have only 4" of gravel.  What can I plant in shallow media?  I would like to make sure that I like doing this before I put a lot of money into it.  I also have other questions but one at a time

Hi Mike,

Plants which won't topple over with small root systems. Chives, lettuce, parsley, are some that come to mind. Obviously plants like tomatoes are to be avoided. Even if you provide support for these large plants, their roots will spread horizontally and take up much growbed space, resulting in fewer plants/sq. ft.
