A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

Hello Folks!

So I was cleaning my bio filter this past week and if fount these nasty looking red worms in there... Don't know what they are. I was thinking parasite... I guess my questions are does anyone have the same thing happening, are they harmful, are they good to have, do I need to get rid of them, are my fish in danger at all?

Hi Noah,

They help to speed up the process of converting fish food into usable nutrient for plants.

how big are they?

... they could be "blood worms"

They are pretty small... that picture is just a close up. They looked like parasites to me, I was worried that my entire system was infested. Harold is right though, they are red wigglers and they are helpful to system!

If they're parasites, you'll know it pretty quickly by the behavior of the fish; most fish parasites will show up by attachment to the actual body of the fish and they will go crazy trying to scrape themselves trying to dislodge them.  You would definitely see abnormal behavior.  If the red guys are only in your filter, I would think also that they're a good sign.  They're chomping down on the residual gunk in the system and breaking things down.  For what it's worth; I'm an old time aquarist, newbie aquaponics...

Thank you, I appreciate your input and conformation! I am relieved to hear that.
