Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

Hi gang,

Plans for State Fair aquaponics exhibit are proceeding nicely.  If you're interested in participating, there are a number of different ways:

1.  If you have the know-how to put together a small pond-based recirculating aquaponics exhibit, there is a pond available (about 20 square feet) on site you could use.

2.  Construction of a few other AP systems will begin shortly.  Lead designer/builders are in place for each.  They may want help building and/or setting up and maintaining between now and the Fair.

3.  During the fair, we'll need docents.  Toward the end of this month I'll start actively organizing folks for that.

If you're interested in any of the above, let me know, if you haven't already...

Hi friends,

Finally the time has come to get our ducks in a row for those wanting to volunteer at the State Fair aquaponics exhibit, in conjunction with the California Aquaculture Association.
We need volunteers to serve as docents at the exhibits during the Fair, which runs July 12 - 28.  You can do as little as one shift of a few hours or as much as all day every day, or anywhere in between.  Your job will be to hang around the exhibit to answer questions and offer information about both the aquaponics exhibit and the larger aquaculture exhibit that we are a part of.
Last year we had about a dozen people serve as docents and I think it was unanimous that it was a great experience on many levels.  A wonderful side benefit was the opportunity to meet and chat with other aquaponics and aquaculture people.  This may sound trite, but it's true:  I'm really, really excited about the range of systems that we'll have on display this year.  It's going to be great.
Volunteers must be at least 14 years old.  Youth volunteers should volunteer at the same time as a responsible adult.  You'll get a parking pass and an entry pass for the day(s) you serve as docent.  We will cover all the other necessary details at a mandatory orientation, which will be held Tuesday, July 9, 12:30 pm at CalExpo.  Please allow a couple hours for orientation, although I think it might take as little as one hour if all goes well.
The other requirement is that each volunteer fill out and sign two Cal Expo forms ahead of time: Volunteer form and a Megan's Law form.  I am attaching them to this announcement (or you can click on the name of each form to go to an online copy).  Please print them out, fill them out, and return them to me at your earliest convenience.  [Scan and email, or US Mail to me at 436 T Street Sac 95811-6914, or give them to me in person].

Please reply to me ASAP to let me know whether you can make the July 9 orientation. Upon hearing from you, I will send you parking and entry instructions.
OK?  If you have questions about issues that will affect whether or not you can be a docent, please let me know.  If you have questions about what you need to know about the systems or the fish etc., you will get that info at orientation.  If you're not sure which of those categories your question falls into, don't hesitate to go ahead and ask me now.

PS.  Once people confirm they are volunteering, I'll start contacting folks by email with regular cc, to help people connect with one another.  If you would like me to keep your email address bcc (ie hidden from other recipients), please let me know.  Thanks.

Hi folks,

I just sent out an email to everyone I'm aware of who I have reason to believe might be interested in being a docent at the aquaculture/aquaponics exhibit at the State Fair.  Mandatory orientation is this Tuesday at 12:30 pm.  If you want to volunteer and did NOT get an email from me tonite, please contact me.  Thanks!  Fair starts next Friday and it's looking great...
