Air Drying Roots

I have read (can't find at the moment) that lettuce does better if you air dry the tap roots before putting the  plants in raft system ..... question is does the same rule work for bok choy?

I am curious, could the tap root be trimmed off and work as well?

It seems that most of mine have been.  Gardening in the ground is somewhat cheap but I enjoy aquaponic gardening more.
