What if?

Ok, lets say one wants to do aquaponics, but does not want to use fish?  Can the same thing be achieved by just using crayfish, just shrimp, just frogs?  I am just thinking , or trying to, think outside of the box.  Maybe with other types of aquatic lifeforms we might achieve the same effect but have lower cost?  Lower maintance?  Less aquatic life loss?  So jump in here and lets hear your thoughts and your ideas.  We may just start something, or we may just have a great laugh.
