Hi Verna,
You can add 1 pound of fish for every 7.5 gallons or 1 cu. ft. of growbed space as the rule of thumb or may add considerably less. The important thing is that you keep the bacterial colony alive for when you get your final growout fish. If the colony is small(due to a small fish stock) when you stock the growout fish finally, you can build it(bacteria) by regulating the amount of fish feed you feed, while testing for ammonia on a daily basis to keep levels low. This way you can build the bacteria slowly and not put your fish under too much stress. So, in this way, the initial stocking densities do not become much of a major concern.
