Have any of you Floridians managed to understand Florida's regulation of red claws. I've read about the Conditional Non-native Species Permit and the Aquaculture Certificate of Registration until my eyes have crossed. I understand the fundamentals of the regulations themselves, but I still can't decipher exactly who is and isn't eligible for the permit. Is possession actually restricted to only commercial dealers, public exhibitors, and researchers? Anyway...
I've emailed the "FWC Exotic Species Coordination Section" requesting some insight, but I'm not holding my breath until I hear back from them. If I do get a reply, I pretty much expect it to be a copy and paste of text of the regulations. If anyone here can shed some light on the process, I'll be forever grateful. If anyone is in the same boat as me, I'd be happy to commiserate with you.
As a grower of the red claw here in Florida I know how hard it is to get the permit. The main reason they limit permiting is that they have to go around and inspect each site on a regular basis and right now I think that there are only 2 people to cover the whole state. As a non-native specie they don't want them to get loose and are afraid that people raising them in their back yard will grow tired of them and release them. I don't think they can keep you from getting the permit as long as you meet their guidelines. They do have to do a site inspection before they will issue the permit this I do know. Don't give up if you really want it!
I looked but did not see any restriction in Louisiana for these crayfish. Can they be shipped to me? If so, how do you ship etc.... PM if you do not want to reply openly..
