I have a 300 gal tank with about 60 tilapia fingerlings. I have been cycled for over 2 months. My readings have been good with nitrates at about 40 to 60. ammonia at .25 to 0. nitrites at 0 and ph at 7.0 to 7.2. ive been testing every week. I just tested and everything was the same except for my nitrates. They are at zero! Do I have to cycle all over.

Hi Miriam,

Plants, especially fruiting plants suck the nitrates in an AP system. This probably means your plants are growing well. Feeding the fish more or reducing the amount of plants you have will increase nitrates. As long as you are having adequate plant growth, zero nitrate readings are fine and no you don't have to recycle. If you can post some pics, would be nice

I just checked the nitrate readings this morning and they are still zero. I worked so hard to get them. here are some pics of my system. Any help would be appreciated. I was also wondering if adding water to my sump could change the readings that much. I added about 20 gal of water that evening but my overall system size is over 400 gal. I didn't think that that was enough water to affect it that much but I don't know for sure.

Hi Miriam,

Nice system you have there! Amazing growth for sure. Yep, your high density of plants are using up all the nitrates to grow for now.......as the fish grow in size and require more feed you nitrate levels will continue to rise, so no need to worry. Leafy greens grow faster with lower nitrate levels..so all's well in AP land
