Tilapia on Vancouver Island

Hi -

I have been unable to locate Tilapia on Vancouver Island.....does anyone know of any? I don't really want to ship them from Ontario this winter. I have emailed and called the University of Vancouver Island plus Red Fish Farms with no luck. I live off another island off of Van. Island, so it takes me a bit of travel time to get anywhere!

You should be able to special order tilapia at the Creatures pet shop on Bay and Blanshard.  Otherwise you can mail order from http://www.noafisheries.ca/, you'd be surprised at how easy and common it is to ship fingerlings.

Red Fish Farms closed down a couple years ago, and VIU won't be able to help you out because they can't order things in for non-academic projects.

I'm glad to see there's some information about this. While I was building my system I was starting to think it might be tougher than originally thought getting tilapia. quite relieved to find this thread. I'm in the middle of cycling my system and will be ready for fish soon I hope. Steve or Jon, are you guys still able to help out? I'm in Victoria.

Hi Jon and Steve -

Thanks for responding Jon and Steve! Someone tracked us down from Cumberland and gave us a breeding pair of what looks like to be blue tilapia! So we have given away our cichlids that we keep in the house and put the pair in that tank - the male looks ready for business! We also got 6 new fry from them but would still be interested in finding some that are larger that can go into the system though. Will be doing some work on it this weekend and will get back to you when I have a better idea of time line and the smallest size that will work. I live on Denman so it takes about an hour plus ferry times to get to Nanaimo.

Nathan have some in breeding mode at the moment ... hope fully in a week or two will have some ... unless we sexed wrong ... A mink clean me so I am starting over .. I am temporarily going to use Gold fish .. (couple hundred) and have some catfish coming (100) ... all I can do is let you know in the near future where I am sitting...
