Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

I am a S.T.E.M. (Science-Technology-Engineering-Math) educator at a small private school in Upstate NY.  I am beginning my journey into aquaponics and deciding whether I want to incorporate it into my curriculum.  I think that it would be a very informative topic and one easily expandable to cover other ideas.  I would like to ask all of you to contribute to my learning. Thank you.

Hi,

I loved math....and ended up as a researcher.  Humus is my little part.  It seems to be popular for Aquaponics.  When taken seriously by high school students, they can get great results for their efforts.

Absolutely, don't hesitate to ask any question that comes to your mind. This community is great for learning!

I'm very new to this site, am only beginning to learn the basics of aquaponics myself.  But I applaud you for wanting to include this subject in education.  It could be that one opportunity that many of your students will ever get. You may never know how positively it could impact their futures.

Hi, my organization is working with a school called St.Sabina Academy here in chicago to start a 50gallon system in their school. We are working with 6th/7th/8th graders. I met with all the teachers (staff of 5 for those grades) which included math/scienece we are currently working on adding bits and pieces of aquaponics to their lesson plans. They just started so we meet again next week to see how they are gonna incorporate it with what the class is doing now. I'll keep you informed but feel free to ask/email me.

Tiffany,

What is the organization you work for and how did you get hooked up with the school? I am trying to secure funding and am looking for partners. I am wondering if your kind of organization may be helpful for us also. There are many, many ways to incorporate aquaponics into both math and science. I hope they get creative.

Thanks and the syudents were so stoked about it that 5 of them brought in fish tanks and they brought in $2 each to help buy material (water pumps/hoses/etc)

I work for The Beloved Community it is a non-profit so we recieved a grant from the state to create and implement a violence prevention program and used urban agriculture as the means to do it (gardening/aquaponics). Because of the success of the urban farm we created over the summer we were able to partner with some organizations whose name holds a little weight in the aquaponics field so we are working with them now and the success of this project will hopefully open doors to more funding.
