Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

I'll be traveling from Sweden to New York City this coming spring. Could you please give me some suggestions for aquaponic growers to visit in the city? If they combine it with roof top gardening, all the better. My plans are not finalized, but I might be there 6-7th April.

I'm trying to convince a shopping center here to take up aquaponics, as a demonstration system to spread awareness of this AP for urban use.

Any ideas welcome!

Hi Louise,

You may be surprised to learn that there isn't a whole lot going on here. I am the NYC chair for the Aquaponics Association and in the city itself there are only a few people who have systems.  I also operate aquaponicsnyc.com which you posted to last night.

http://www.savefarms.org  is probably the most public of them

The Food and Finance High School got almost 2 million in funding for a rooftop greenhouse. It is operated by Philson Warner who claims to have invented Aquaponics and charges for "licenses" of the technology. I have attempted to contact him several times with no response... let me know if you get through.

North of the city is a research farm called Cabbage Hill cabbagehillfarm.org

Other than that there are systems in peoples apartments like mine. Let me know when you are traveling here and we can meet..

Hi!

Thank you for your reply! Save Farms seems like a great place to go, and I'd love to visit a private little system! Mini-AP in my hallway is the stage I'm at myself. I'd love to meet with you. However, I won't bother with Warner, since I don't think I'd care to meet someone who is not into sharing knowledge for free. For a future for humanity we need to share what we know.

Holy Cow! I just watched that video with Philson Warner...Man oh man, not only does he claim to have invented aquaponics and coined the phrase, but at about 4:00 into the video he actually seems to allude to the claim that N.sonomas and N.bacter are "his" bacteria. That he has developed them genetically over time?!? Nevermind  that we now know that in all liklihood N.spiria is the main bug responsible for converting nitrite to nitrate, I just hope nobody tells him, or maybe he'll claim to have "developed" that bacteria "genetically over time" as well...What a nut job...Though I would like to know how he keeps a density of 2lbs of fish per 1 gallon of water...Actually on second thought, I don't want to know...

Sorry for butting in here...

...and sorry to keep the rant going, but I decided to take a wrong turn on the information super highway, and actually watch the entire 24 minute 57 second video. Towards the end this charlatan claims that fish waste only gives off 12 of the 16 needed plant essential elements and that he supplements the other 4. When an audience member asks what those 4 elements are, the audience member basically told that you have to purchase "the secret" from Mr. Warner. What a crock of shit (sorry for swearing)...

Out of the 16 plant essential elements needed for development, 3 of them are structural elements. Meaning, Oxygen, Carbon, and Hydrogen. None of which neither humans, nor fish, nor hydroponic nutrients can provide. These are basic structural elements, because we live on Planet Earth in the Universe scenario that we happen to occupy...that's just the way it is.  I don't care if god is your Uncle, you still cannot 'supplement' (like Mr. Wilson claims to) the above mentioned three (H, C, O).

So...that leaves only one magical, mystery element "that the fish (supposedly) do not provide".

This guy is full of gems like..."we pump the water antigravitationally upwards to the..."  Jackass.

Apparently he's also "invented" NFT...only he calls it NDFT...Nutrient Film Technique was actually invented by Dr. Allen Cooper.

Louise, I see now why you wish to avoid this guy on your trip

Yeah... how he got 2 million dollars to play god is beyond me - a shame actually.

Louise,

I would be happy to meet and maybe even go to visit SAVE farms. I haven't met them yet. When you have a better idea of when you will be in town send me an email: info at aquaponicsnyc.com

Ha, ha, ha! I didn't realize that Warner was a complete loony when I decided not to bother with him. To me the attempt at keeping important world changing knowledge for private gain is enough.

Jonathan - are weekends or weekdays better for you? If we go to Save Farm together, which would be nice, I need to check with them to when's a good time for them. We (me + my mother) plan to travel either the week before April 13, or the week after (I need to be here for work on the 13th). Within that time we are quite flexible. I want to see some urban farming, some roof gardens, and we're seeing a friend in Princeton, total maybe 2-3 days in NYC.

http://www.brooklyngrangefarm.com/ is the mother of all rooftop gardens... 2.5 acres. We also have http://gothamgreens.com/ which is a commercial hydroponic grower that sells to Whole Foods but does not allow tours. Since your going to Princeton you might want to investigate http://www.herbanfarms.com who are the only real commercial aquaponic farm in the area, just west of Philadelphia.

If you want to have a farm to table experience second to none you should eat a http://www.bluehillfarm.com, a bit pricy but amazing food with a lot of the greens grown on the restaurant's roof top in Greenwich Village

I am pretty flexible with my schedule so we will play it by ear closer to the time you are traveling.

Sounds great, Jonathan! I'll get back to you!
