I am going to try an experiment this winter, by putting a coil of tubing in the circulating system, with the coil surrounded by compacted horse manure.  From what I have read the anaerobic composting of the manure will generate heat 24hrs a day for 2-4 months.  What amount of heat I guess will depend on volume of manure.  If this works I will be adding constant heat with free fuel.

Scott - I hope you will post your efforts and conclusions to this discussion. I will try to summarize the discussion if it seems fruitful.

@Scott.... tubing within a grass clipping compost heater has been tried... quite successfully... by one of my clients here in Australia....

And I experimented with a purpose built solar array heater... about 5 years ago...

Used to get too hot during summer.... had to cover it with shade cloth... or blind...

Worked well ... raising the temperature by 3-4 degrees most days....

But during winter nights... I'd lose most of the gains.... (granted my systems were outside)

And that's the problem with heating... unless your system is housed... and/or insulated.... any overall gains through the season.. are minimal...
