A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

This is a single barrel concept that I put together for students and local gardening club to be able to recreate. It works really well and is really easy to do.

Hey Mike - Yes please send any and all info you have! You can send to my email address, which I just messaged you. We will be moving in one year, so I really want to learn the basics on something small. And if all goes well I will be building something more substantial in the future.

Thanks!

Very interesting! I would love to start with something small and simple like this. I sent you a friend request and a request for the parts list, etc. Thanks for sharing!

I'm going to fire off my email address as well, the super small school my wife works at really wants an affordable system setup in the corner.  I was just designing a 20 gal aquarium set but this looks like it might fit the financial bill even better!

Cheers

Brad

Hi Guys,

I had to locate my files for the setup. My Mac crashed (ie i dropped and broke it  ) Ill post them again in the next day or so and send files via e-mail to those that want them. Anyway thanks for the responses ive had this post up for a while and not that many seemed interested at first. But better late than never

Terrific Mike. I am glad that you havn't forgotton about us. I am still patiently waiting! I have my barrel and have a source for hydroton.

While we are waiting, any advice on quantity of hydroron to buy?

Thank you!

Excellent thanks Mike!

Tony, 1 large bag of Hydroton 50 lbs will do. You could use less if you make your top shallower and just make the bottom taller.

Well that just fits to well, I've got a spare bag from my system.  The supplier had it on for $23 a bag so I bought extra!

$23 is a good deal. Buy more and store it away. I bought a pallet and got it for $25 per bag.

Yeah these guys are... funny... lol.  They "accidentally" ordered 5 extra skids and had no room for it in the shop so it's beside the building with a blow out price.  I bought 6 bags, used 3 for my system and gave a buddy 2 for his.  I'm looking forward to working on this single barrel system though and I'll have to go grab more so I can build a few.

Thanks, Mike. Looking forward to getting one started here. I've been pricing hydroton locally and the cheapest I found it for was $27 a bag, guess that doesn't sound too far off.

Did anyone ever hear from Mike? I didn't get an email. I was sure I sent him my email but maybe I got missed :( Would love to get started on this project before winter comes :)
