Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

Hello all,

I've gotten to the final stages of design, including some of the details about stocking rates, grow area size, and such. Anyone interested in a project bigger than a normal backyard setup but not quite a commercial size, either, may find it useful. I like to think of it as "rural village scale." Of course, any doubts you may have about the system would be greatly appreciated. Here is a link to the most recent article on my website/blog about the project I'm doing. No advertising, it's just a thinking-out-loud kind of blog. And here also is the layout.

Not sure but you might save money by using a single larger Clarifier/filter/degassing unit rather than one for each hydroponic tank since you can actually flow zizag fashion from hydro tank to hydro tank in a raft system and have just one line back to the sump.

Hello TCLynx,

Thanks for your comment. A single, larger clarifier/filter/degassing unit would certainly work, but it would have to be fabricated. I'm hoping that this system I'm making will be a model for some of the poor villages in Laos. It's something that could be set up and run on the grounds of the village elementary school and run by the children under their teachers' supervision. That way they could have at least one nutritious meal a day. So I want to use ubiquitous materials like 200-liter plastic drums. I am also a believer in redundancy. With four individual units I can shut any one of them down completely for whatever reason and still have the system working at 3/4 capacity. It may also be possible to vary the nutrients in each of the lines depending on the frequency of cleaning the orchard netting/filter -- less often for the hydro tank with tomatoes, bell peppers, and such. At the moment I'm thinking that one of the four orchard netting/filters could be rinsed clean each day. That would keep things more consistent than if there were only one big one. Anyway, such is my reasoning.

Thank makes sense too.

Just means you will probably have more flow/pumping to be able to feed all beds flow at the same time rather than in series but that will probably just turn into better circulation for the fish tank anyway.
