Fish What type is best for profit?

Hi everyone :)

 

My first aquaponics set is ready to go, its time to add the fish i have a 200 gallon FT sitting under my 75 gallon GB.

 

iv been doing some reading and searching in google trying to understand which fish is worth growing for profit.

 

from the amount i did read, it seems as though fish and profit are very far from each other LOL,unless you have like alot of big tanks and spend lots of money,and it takes years to even get that profit back.

 

but i read those in just fish keeping website they were not doing aquaponics, alot of profit is made back in aqauponics with the plants and fish kind of becomes like a little profit on the side.

 

I do plant to go REALLY big with gaint fish tanks and much more, but till then i only have a 200 gallon FT , and just wondering what type of fish is wroth keepining in there.

 

I dont mind if its for eating, or just selling :). but looking for a fish thats easy to keep at first, and where i dont have to spend so much money on fish food :p.

 

 

also has anyone ever tried keeping sturgeons in aquaponics sets?

     Have you looked into minnows. I currently having trouble finding info about them but the profits seem rather good. I've been told 20# of breeders will produce 400# in about 18 months and $3 a lb. makes a nice income supplement.  I'm having trouble finding food and food sources.

You can use regular flake fish food for FHMs.

     Will have to find something cheaper. The other link mentioned Purina game fish feed . Will have to check on that in the fifty pound sack.  Thanks for the info.     L F

im open to all kinds of ideas not just 1 type of fish, but it is my first time so i dont want to go in way over my head.

 

im leaning towards koi, but im open to all ideas :)

 

I really want a fish i that i can sell for eating because our family owns a store and i can sell them there :).

 

but i have not found the right fish yet, i want to do sturgeons but FT is not big enough not yet atleast ;).

 

so i  want to find something simple to take care of because after bout 6 or 7 months im not going to be able to take care of them i will have to turn that over to my dad(he understand a bit) and i will be moving away to start a bigger aquaponics project :). so this is kind of like a learning period for me. and im trying to take in all the info i can about both the plant and the fish side of aquaponics.

 

ps. i like learning so i dont mind reading your long posts :))).

Sylvia is by far right about the koi, the other great thing about them is that they are like gold fish and don’t require warm water but will do ok in it as long as your DO is high enough

 

With smaller or larger tanks you can get something like Swordtails, guppies, or platies. I suggest these because the right strain can go for $5-$100+ per pair to the right people. They are also extremely easy to breed-they are called livebearers which means they give birth to live young and have a much higher survival rate than egg laying fish. Females have from 15-60+ fry per month in my experience, numbers that people give always vary. These are generally better than the mollies which are considered the lower end livebearers and won’t always sell very well. But like the sailfin mollies sailfin swordtails or platies are much more expensive. 

 

When it comes to aquarium fish it is best to make a larger initial investment, cheap strains will only get cheaper. The good news is the purchase of a single pair can get you an entire colony going quickly. If you are interested or even still reading this check out www.aquabid.com It is a sort of ebay for fish. Look under the “guppies” or “Domesticated” sections to see the livebearers people are currently selling and just how much they are selling for. Unless you want to ship your fish you may want to contact a local fish or pet store to see if they would make a deal with you. Ask them what kind of fish they would be interested in long term. They might not pay as much for them but they might would give you a few $s per fish which adds up fast if you have more than about 30g. Craigslist would also work for selling some but you may get stuck with them.

what kind of food fish would sell well at your store?  What kind of fish would your family want to eat?  Provided they are fresh water and of a size appropriate to your tank, I would choose the ones your family might be most interested in since they will need to get involved and excited about the project to keep it going when you leave.

well at our store we already sell trout and sturgeons and they go great :), so the fish my dad is interested in i cant keep in the 200gallon FT, and i don't know to many different fish that is good to eat and easy to keep,thats kind of why i was going towards the koi, cuz it sounded easy to keep and the prices are not bad,its just i dont know how well the koi martket is here in my city, and i dont want to deal with selling online seems like to much trouble. 

 

maybe i can do crawfish lol. i dont know im still searching and looking till something comes up. again thanks for the help :)))

Bluegill are good eating for the family.

Keep in mind that in a little system of only 200 gallons of fish tank, you are not likely to keep enough of anything to really serve much for the store.

 

Remember you want something easy and I don't expect your family to be much into trying to sell the fish so you probably want something for them to eat, or pets.  This is your learning system, don't try to hard to make money from it since you wont' be around long enough to really do much with that side of it.  Learn to grow some fish (whatever type) and some veggies.  Get some experience from it even if it means just getting some cheap goldfish to keep while you do research for your future projects.

NICE, your right i might be wanting to do a little to much, its just how i am i always want to do something the best i can and the the maximum :p. but i will just find something easy to grow for this is more of learning the making profit for now :).

I Just don't want you to spend all your remaining time before you leave agonizing about what fish to get and then never really having much time with fish in your system.  Go ahead and get started with something so you can learn while you continue trying to figure out what would be the best thing for you.
