Teresa, i dont think the distance would have an effect. in fact you should be able to make a turn or two if needed. i would use 2" at least to make sure you have plenty flow.

Very cool.  I will see about working this into my future setup.  Do you think distance between the siphon and the fish tank will have any bearing on performance??

thanks David, this is after about 60 hours of trial and error. i could not fiqure out why the bell siphon wouldnt work when plumbed strait into the tank. ...its all about the siphon having unrestricted air flow. oh and the reason for the pipe going to 4" is to create a bucket effect, to give the water room to splash when the siphon started and stopped. otherwise the water would geyser out of the top each time.
