@m4gaujan, yes we plant our seedlings as plugs, but more importantly, we don't often rinse our towers, allowing our microbial communities to get really large and healthy. This usually means that accumulated solids (our towers also function as our solids filtration) and roots build up to a certain point in the inserts. We use redworms inside of our towers to keep this mass manageable, and the end result is a very healthy, dynamic growing environment.
Did you plant that with the soil still on the root? Sorry if it's a dumb question.....but is that why the medium is so mucky?
