I did a bit of experimenting with it. The problem is that the wood isn't very uniform and has knobs and branches that get caught up on everything. It makes for a very inconsistent burn with that and having different wood types and moisture contents. I need something I can just light and ignore it for several hours.
Here's a question for you. Have you considered making a feeding tube for your rocket mass heater which would enable you to auto feed wood from your property? As an example, a 6-8 inch pipe standing straight up that you could drop lengths of wood into, then close at the top - open at the bottom where the wood drops into the combustion zone. I've heard that some homemade BBQ rigs have such devices and this seems feasible to me.
