I had a 45 mil EPDM tank begin leaking after several months, so it happens.  I would suggest looking around at your local feed store for a sturdy tub,

I suspect the lettuce may be getting too wet, allowing Pythium, to grow

I am experimenting with smaller holes in my foam to keep the net pots a little higher.  I'm hoping this will keep my spinach from dying like your lettuce.  But from what I've read it sounds difficult to get rid of.
