I have experience in hydroponic growing and have an airoponic system set up in the kitchen's southern windows and want to replace my nutritional reservoirs with a 50 gal aquarium. Anyone out there from Portland?

Building a greenhouse for Aquaponics

Posted on April 7, 2012 at 9:45am 1 Comment

What an exciting event this has been.  Thanks to the work of Rick Stillwagon . . . things are happening.

Once he had spent some time on site and some measurements were taken, he went back to Roy, Washington and sent us e-mails with plans on what we needed to get done, while he started building the greenhouse.

We leveled the area, closed it in with 8"x6" treated wood and insulated with 2" styrofoam, then sand. …

Going from hydro to aquaponic

Posted on November 6, 2011 at 2:13pm 4 Comments

I set this system up in our kitchen last year to help hone my skills of growing lettuce and herbs using a 50 gal reservoir with the plans of switching to a 50 gal fish tank this year.  Just getting ready now  make that move, and trying to figure out what kind of filtering system would be best.  I used coco 3" cups in the gutters when doing "hydroponics" and I am wondering if I should switch to the clay in the gutters and add earthworms.  Am I barking up the wrong tree? Any advice out there?…

I'm in SW on 87th in Garden Home.  I'm working with a man from Hillsboro to put a system in my greenhouse.  Let's plan to visit in the coming weeks.  Perhaps after my system is in.

Fantastic system you have there, Oma!  Thanks for posting the pics...I love how you have encorporated the lights into a tight space.  I would definitely go with Hydroton vs coir in your baskets...maybe has you harvest or replace your plants.  The coir decomposes, which not only takes up oxygen but is also needs to be replaced...which is removing beneficial bacteria from the system.  Hydroton lasts forever and is inert.

To find some Portland members you can try doing a search of the Member database (see the Members tab above) and also check the Member Map (again, a tab above).  Hope you can connect up with some folks!

Welcome Oma,

Thanks for joining the Aquaponic Gardening community!  I hope you find it a fun place to explore aquaponics.  There is a real blend of experienced and new aquapons in this community, so please don’t hesitate to get in there and start asking questions.  Everyone is quite happy to help out new members – no question is too basic.

A great place to start is to read the “How to Use This Site” link on the upper right corner, “Start Here” section of the Home page.  You might also find the “Aquaponic Gardening Rules of Thumb” guidelines helpful.

Please participate and check in with us every day!  We are constantly posting news about aquaponics and the good food movement.

Thanks again for joining us, and I look forward to getting to know you.

Sylvia
