"It's hard to see but the big Shubunkin is about 6 - 8 inches long. Beautiful tail. I like these fish because they are very hardy, beautiful, and will handle ph fluctuations which can happen in a 20 gallon tank."
I need to shut down my indoor system for a few months. I have 2 mature Shubunkin, 1 albino Hypostomus to clean the aquarium. There is another small fish living in the sump.I live in SE Portland and need to do this ASAP. A donation for the fish would be nice but I'd settle for a good home. You'll need to get them Please respond if interested.Linda…See More
I can't say I know a lot. I've been doing this for several years and mostly work from experimentation. They're are so many who really grasp the technical side. At this point I'm working with the system…"
"We read a comment that you made to Jeff G. about fish for his aquaponics system and you mentioned getting 70 lbs of tomatoes. Are your barrel and fish tank in a greenhouse? We are having trouble getting more than a couple tomatoes."
"One of the members of the NW Aquaponic group had them. Contact Anne Phillip (Micro Mobius) for who it was. Check with local fish stores. There's a koi store in outer SE that might carry them, I feed them like goldfish.…"
"Chris thanks for the honest statement on growing fish in the NW. I have grown tilapia, cat fish, blue gil, shumunkin, and gold fish. I didn't like the taste of the tilapia, sold the blue gil and cat fish, and found that shubunkin…"
"I USE A 15 GAL SWIRL FILTER BETWEEN THE FISH TANK AND SUMP, THIS REMOVES ALL FISH WASTE, I ALSO KEEP 5/10 YOUNG YOUNG FISH IN THE SUMP, I SYPHON THE SOLIDS FROM THE FILTER TANK EVERRY MONTH OR SO. THIS ALSO PRVENTS SOLIDS FROM BEING PUMPED INTO THE…"
"If it's any consolation, I do both (flood and drain and bell siphon). I have heard that it is easier on a pump to run continuously rather than on/off. Saying that, I haven't had any problems with my pumps in either system.…"
I am still pretty new to all this, but am learning fast (more by trial and error then anything). I have red worm in my system, their great at gobbling up old roots and debris. I do not actively feed them to my fish but am sure that the…"
I have a dirty sump system so cleaning fish waste is a monthly chore. I pump out of the sump into a media bed. No problems with this. I got the black worms to eat the fish waste and be a food source for my blue gil and cat fish. I haven't added them in as I thought I would ask someone knowledgeable about this first. One concern is clogging the pump. I'm told they will stay on the bottom so I've put my pump in a shallow bowl where water can flow over but is still about 1/5 " deep.Next…See More
"Check that your media source doesn't have limestone as this will never let the pH get where you want it. As Maureen said most systems will tend to more acidic so there is something fundamental in your system holding the pH high."

Linda, do you have the email address for your friends whose farm we visited before the meeting? Could you send it to me in a private message? Some of the photos I took turned out well and I'd like to share them with them (could you tell me their names again too?). They were so great and I enjoyed seeing all their happy animals. I'm want to put the pictures up on my blog, but I'd like to get the woman's permission to put photos of her up (I think the photos of the animals are ok for now!).
It would be great to make a plan to go distillery tasting! I would also love to come over some time and I am sure Jeremy would be into either plan. Don't worry about the money! I am grateful that I could go along with you. I had a lot of fun. I am also going to go to the InFarmation talk at the Holocene next Tuesday from 5:30-8:30. (http://www.friendsoffamilyfarmers.org/?page_id=601) Maybe you'd like to go to that also. Either way- the distillery is in our future!
Hi! What part of Portland do you live? I live in N.E. just off Alberta on 19th. Just going from hydroponic to aquaponic. Just got a 60 gal aquarium today and will hook it up to the existing gutter systems. We are only in town here during the week and leave Friday afternoon to go out to our cabin on the White Salmon River, in Wa. for the week ends.
It's amazing how fast this whole reality of aquaponics is happening, isn't it?
