"Don't worry the Ph will creep down.  It takes a long time for the carbonate to be released from the shells.  The rate of release will vary depending on if they were crushed or not.  I would suggest in the future to get crushed…"

"The benefit of a buffer such as a bicarbonate is that you can't over-do it. It is a buffer, which means it stabilizes around neutral pH.  You can't "over-do" this type of add."

"Try adding crushed oyster shells to your bed. They give off a very slow bicarbonate release over. . decades. I don't know your system, but most of the damage (besides the lesions) would be from post mortem picking by other fish. Some fish will…"

"Air lifts can certainly trigger a bell siphon, once the siphon is triggered by water level in the bed, it will drain.  The air lift is also great for pulling solids out of the fish tank due to the "burping", or sudden rushes of water…"

Welcome Brady,

Thanks for joining the Aquaponic Gardening community!  I hope you find it a fun place to explore aquaponics.  There is a real blend of experienced and new aquapons in this community, so please don’t hesitate to get in there and start asking questions.  Everyone is quite happy to help out new members – no question is too basic.

A great place to start is to read the “How to Use This Site” link on the upper right corner, “Start Here” section of the Home page.  You might also find the “Aquaponic Gardening Rules of Thumb” guidelines helpful.
