Green Acre Aquaponics

This is a group for those that want to stay connected with Green Acre Aquaponics. At Green Acre, we are focused on optimizing commercial growing with the newest techniques and technologies for integrated system growing.  Recognizing the value of integrating media bed growing into raft (DWC) technology, this hybrid aquaponics design optimizes nutrient density by allowing the additional metabolization of valuable solids typically removed from DWC systems. Why remove the most valuable element in…See More

Commercial Aquaponics and Profitability

Posted on May 9, 2013 at 10:27am 7 Comments

The commercial viability of aquaponics is likely the hottest contested topic on most aquaponic forums today and is the million dollar question that everyone wants answered. While I'm still not willing to make my financial data public(you would be amazed how many people have asked), I will say that we are indeed a profitable farm based on revenue generated by the farm alone. Although our farm's revenue is derived in diverse ways, even after extracting any non farm related revenue from…

Cold Weather, Aquaponics and Manatees

Posted on March 22, 2013 at 5:34am 1 Comment

Just a couple weeks ago we experienced a somewhat harsh freeze. I know that most people’s reaction to that is ” a freeze, but aren’t you in Florida?!”  We are, however our north central location often sees the thermometer dipping into freezing temps overnight and as I often like to joke, we are nestled in the mountains of Florida after all, or as close as it gets at 220ft above sea level.  I seriously doubt that it really contributes to our colder temps when in all likelihood our little…

Time for a Different Kind of Revolution?

Posted on November 21, 2012 at 2:30pm 5 Comments

Food and eating for our society has evolved far beyond the need for sustenance, but instead now has a myriad of social conventions associated with it.  We share big announcements over dinner, engagements are made, careers are toasted and yearly rites of passage are commemorated.  Food consumption is not just about eating to survive any longer but instead has become a venue for entertainment and social activity.  Unfortunately though, this shift in our diet and our eating habits has…

Hello Gina,

Thank you for your kind welcome.  I've studied aquaponics for some time now along with my degree in wildlife and fisheries.  I'm retired now and in the planning stages of building a greenhouse for aquaponics. I've tried several different systems in the past and have my plans fairly well in place for my larger scale system.  After eating marron and red claws many years ago in Australia I believe thats what I will raise as I love to eat them and believe after inquiring the local resteraunts that I can easily sale all surplus but I'm not familiar with their specific culture.  So 'm interested in any and all help and knowledge anyone is willing to share with me.   So I'm looking forward to learning your site and meeting many of the members.

Thanks Dale

Thanks for the welcome. The system featured in your photos is of particular interest of mine as I am currently researching the feasibility of a similar sized operation as an early retirement project. The big twist/challenge however is that it would be implemented in Southern Vietnam. I don't see much discussion of similar topic here (and minimally on other AP forums) so it should make for an interesting thread :) Coming Soon™ I still have some more digging and thinking to do.
