Upper Peninsula Aquaponics

Hi all!

My name is Andy Langberg. I am an Environmental Conservation major at Northern Michigan University in Marquette, MI.

This year some friends and I have started NMU's first aquaponics group. We have decided to call our organization Upper Penninsula Aquaponics. Our group is a student organized community of aquaponics enthusiasts. We want to provide a means for students and community members to come together, learn more about aquaponics, and eventually get some systems built.
Our group is looking to host keynote speakers to educate our group on aquaponics; hold weekly meetings where group members can share knowledge, resources, and discuss ideas; work as a group to construct aquaponics systems and to be an asset to the Marquette community by providing food to local pantries.

We would love some support from the aquaponics community. Anyone in our area is encouraged to attend meeting, you don't need to be a student to join the club. Wether you have information to share or are just looking to find out more about Aquaponics, feel free to get in contact with our organization!

Comment by Terri Mikkola on August 28, 2012 at 7:12pm: Hi Andy, I was in the UP 2 weeks ago visiting relatives. I was born in Ishpeming, but grew up down state. I now live in Denver. I went to NMU's School of Technology and Applied Sciences and studied Wastewater Technology (early 80's). I don't believe this program is still offered. I look at AP as a wastewater treatment system that happens to produce plant and fish.

Are you considering building an AP greenhouse? If so, you may want to investigate sub-grade greenhouses such as the Walipini, which would reduce heating/cooling and lighting costs.
