On Feb 10, 2013 I started the system with "feeder" goldfish. I didn't think I needed the filtration set up at first, but the water stayed quite murky, so I did add the filtration
Filtration consist of 1 screen, 2 pebbles, and 3rd 2" thick mesh filter. The water cleared up over night.
I added a few gallons of existing water, from a friend's system, to help the start up.
Today I set up the 40 feet of 3" pvc for the primary run. The secondary run will be 20 feet. I used 2 inch holes 10 inch on center, since I expect to grow smaller varieties with the 3 inch. Both runs connect to seperate 50 gallon fish tubs, that both overflow drain into the 50 gallon filtration tub.
I have started 60 lettuce seeds, and 12 nasturtiums. I am seeing videos with huge nasturtiums, and I think they may have been a poor choice for the 3" pvc.
The initial plan was to run 60 feet of pvc, but man, the 30 feet long pipe was too heavy to manipulate, and get the gradual flow, without bogging and overflow from the 2 " holes.
I believe that the return line along with bubble stone will be enough for the fish. I am concerned that only overflow drainage to turn the water over will not allow enough waste removal into the filtration???
Enjoyable, but the parts add up in the beginning.
