I am a 71 y.o., now-retired Town Planner, and it is only through my relatively recent joining of the 'Urban Agriculture Group' on Linked-in, that I have become to fully appreciate the issue of sustainable food production and supply.
Such was not only not a 'town planning' issue encountered during my planning career, but does not figure as an issue that is or is required to be addressed, in any state or local council planning schemes I have ever come across.
Through this group I now have a much greater understanding of the various aspects of not only 'urban agriculture', but also the wider aspects of both 'traditional' and 'industrial' agriculture and its related food delivery system and its many detrimental aspects, both with respect to food cost and quality, and the adverse impact of 'industrial monoculture' farming on the long-term quality and ultimate capacity of agricultural soils.
I have more recently been involved in some 'casual' 'post-retirement' projects involving potential local food production and aquaponic systems, as well as as seeking to see that these issues are more widely disseminated in the town planning community and incorporated into town planning schemes, and the general community consciousness.
