No

I am building an aquaponics system from the plans for a micro system from Friendly Aquaponics that I purchased a few months ago. I am looking for a pure strain Blue Tilapia source somewhere hopefully in the western US near to my location. I am not quite ready for the fish yet but will be in approx. 5 weeks. Is it realistic to expect that warm water fish could be shipped to my location in the dead of winter or should I just go fishing for some trout until the spring? Any advise would be appreciated.

I have gold fish in my system now because of the issues with the state about fish. I think I will be adding bass to my system for our personal supply and not selling them. Bass grow well and the taste great ad you will not have the issues like tilapia. Thanks for the invite to come check your system out and I would like to in the next week or so if that works?

NIce! I have also had mine up and running for about a month and have started cycling with fish. I have a 11x16' green house and about 200sft of grow space with different typs of lettuce and some tomato plants. I think im going to try heating the water by digging a hole 3' deep and raping black pipe down in to it. Then compost in the same hole for extra FREE heat. thoughts? I would like to come check yours out if you are into it?

Hi Louis,
We have made our way back to grants pass from Seattle and are exited to get our project off the ground.
I have space to start a 20x 40 greenhouse operation going and can't wait. It would be great to come see your set up
and talk.  Southern oregon is in a real need for this type of year round food production. Not sure if you will bringing fish to
market but it not as easy as I had thought... Yet doable.
Let me know when it might be a good time to come out.
Best,
Dustin

Hi Louis,

I'll be moving to Grants pass soon and was wondering how your system is working? Have you introduced any fish yet?

Thx

I'd probably say go for trout (or other climate appropriate fish) unless your system is already set up with heat and indoors.
I'm not nearly so fond of Tilapia anymore just because of the heating issue and I'm in Central Florida (two winters of having to go to extreme measure to keep them alive in a greenhouse in Florida.) Never mind now I don't even have the greenhouse but we actually like eating the catfish better :P

Yes, you can get tilaipia in the middle of winter. You may need to pay more for the shipping because of the extra packing materials, but as long as your state allows imports of tilapia fry you should be able to find them. Is your system indoors?
