Hello Gordon. I've been aquaponic gardening since 2007. I tried Hydroponics and it was a good system but was way too stressfull trying to keep up with all the chemicals and Ph levels etc, etc. Aquaponics is much less stressful. In fact its relaxing. We moved recently to a larger home with an acre of land. We raise chickens, ducks and Fish. I am in the process of converting my pool into a natural pond for growing fish and aquaponic system. If you have questions I might be able to help you out. I have two separate systems going. I am dismantling one of them for the pool and keeping the other for my strawberries. I also do raised bed gardening.
I'm still only growing hydroponically & earth bucket systems. I bought 5 acres in N FL and have been busy getting it suitable for sustainable farming (an old cracker house and a mobile home) though still in Pinellas. Here are a couple links that would be helpful to you though. This link is to a member on here"Gina Cavaliero's Page" Green Acre in Brooksville and has classes offered coming April http://aquaponicfarmingcourse.com/green-acre-aquaponics-brooksville-fl/

Hope it helps! Lots of people use pea gravel as growing medium, I used it for my hydroponics set in cement mixer tubs both from home depot. Hope this helps!
