High School Class Project
We've been running a aquaponics system at our high school for about two years.It is a major part of one of our classes and this website has provided much help so I decided to join it.

Hi advanced biology, I am also a high school biology teacher looking to start an AP program at our new greenhouse (2 of em' 1 indoor / 1 open air). it will be completed within a year and i'd like to chat about what has and hasn't worked with your high school. Thanks Aaron

I saw you posted a question on the chat that never got answered.
Seashells, crushed coral, etc. are Calcium Carbonate. This is used to raise PH to 7.2 or 7.5 - I can't remember which. It does this by dissolving when the PH is lower than that, and raising the KH, thus the PH.
Personally, I like mixing some in my grow beds so the roots can have contact with a high-calcium surface. I also put some in a high water flow area so if the water PH tries to drop, the calcium carbonate can dissolve and buffer the PH.
I hope this answers your question or at least points you in the right direction for further research.
