They are a fast eating/growing composting creature in the summer in FL. The Flies are not a pest since they don't bite, sting or even eat as adults. The just mate and lay their eggs which turn into larva that eat lots of garbage and will self harvest to be great fish and bird food (many people also buy them to feed to lizards and other pets.)

Some of the larva have a habit of climbing out of the bin and getting to the ground instead of going into the harvest bucket. These are what my chickens were digging for around there. The chickens and ducks love BSF larva.
