That is how I starter my raft system with mint they grow fast and develop many ruts very good for filtration and I install them next to the return pump to the tank like a last defense line, always have a mint plant it is also a beneficial and you can make a delicious bed time te. DO NOT plant mint in a gravel system it may ruin it clogging it because of the ruts.
