but you could use the bottom as a sump/dwc as an independent system .. would have to partition the bottom with nets or similar if you were to run fish in it ... hoping to score some freshwater prawns / shrimp in my particular case.

No pipe ... it is a 4x4 +/- garden tie (wood) ... bottom is a to be a float bed (18 inch) same as middle (12 inch) .. gravel on top. Still working on a 1600 gallon sump ...

I like the way you used pipe.  Your beds are beautiful!  I'm guessing that is a sump tank on the bottom.
