lol! Love the skunk story! Fortunately for me, our livestock guard dogs discourage skunks from visiting.

Hi Bill. The only drainage holes in there are the ones you see in the picture that came with the nursery pot. I add a few inches of course redwood chips first to cover the holes, and cover the opening of the hose. The food added keeps the level going up, so no, no problem with the larva getting stuck in the tube. You could always smash the end, or cork it if you were worried about it.

It was working great, until I put a skunk in there. Note to readers: do not put dead skunks in BSFL bins. I trapped a skunk in our chicken coop, "taught it to swim", and tossed the carcass in the bin, thinking I was so smart for the extra grub food. It's not worth it. It was fine for a couple days, but then started to stink like skunk. After about a month, I gave up waiting for the smell to go away, and burried the contents. Now I'm modifying the spiral ramp to an angled hoop, and will start again.

Jon, how is this working out? Do the larva wiggle up through the inside of the hose? Do you have holes in the bottom for drainage?
