Bob - the media is a mixture of virgin pvc granules used in plastic moulding and vermiculite.  I heat the pvc hith a heat gun to get them a bit sticky, which then causes a bit of nodule formation if you get it right (kind of like a peanut brittle).  I was looking for something light and cheap.  It does work out a bit cheaper than clay balls
