The smaller pipes may clog and overflow more easily.  3" diameter is not big enough for 2" net pots which is what most folks like to use.  The smaller the pipe and the smaller the pot, the more higher chance you'll run into trouble with big full-grown plants falling over or out.

That doesn't mean you can't try it though!  It might work well if you only plan to grow microgreens or other small quick-harvest crops.

What is the difference of using 4" pipe as opppsed to 3" pipe?

Hancor 3000 4" HDPE triple wall drainage pipe.  It is smooth outside/inside with a middle layer of corrugation.  Super light weight, easy to cut and the middle layer adds a little bit of insulation.

I didn't like the floppy flexibility of the corrugated black pipe nor its heat-absorbing characteristics.  I also didn't like the higher price and weight of pvc.  This seems to be the best option all around.
