This is a new system we are currently installing for an RV park in the Houston suburbs. It is a 500 gallon in ground tank (pond) system which is designed to reduce initial costs of setup for communities and limited income families. The residents would like to have Koi and Catfish for stocking out existing ponds on the property using starter ponds such as this.
That's awesome Ray! A lot of people overlook the simplicity, low cost and low maintenance of in ground ponds. We also have an above ground pond a little larger in size for those people that want the more aesthetic look and can afford to pay for it. Adding a grow bed adds to the excitement of the system as a whole and allows for greater stocking density so long as it is offset by proper amount of grow bed. I prefer to aerate via waterfall as well. Not only is it more soothing to us as humans the fish seem to love it as well.
My favorite cichlid is the Jack Dempsey. He'd try to attack anything that walked by his tank. I taught him to hand feed but for anyone else he would bite their fingers. Great fish in your setup! I will have to come check out your pictures.
This is exactly how I started my pond. Added an Atlantic waterfall and skimmer. My fairly stable bioload is 3 Koi (24"-15"), 2 Plecos (15") and a newly added African Chiclid (3"). I have yet to hook up to my garden, which I hope will greatly increase the bioload capacity.
