We are using speedling trays with vermiculite.  The seeds are direct seeded.  We are using no filtration, and therefore the roots at beginning of the raceway get so gunked up.  We are going eventually test the use of a settling chamber, however as of yesterday those plant with the high level of gue had a high biomass of lettuce.  That being said we must remember that we are using a flow trough system from trout, and our nutrients are extremely low.  The addition of solids on the roots might actually help in our system.

Matt are you using different filtration method on the darker roots. Curious as to what type of raft is that. Never seen cubes before. Nice system.
