Teresa - There is about 1 1/2 inches of pea gravel on the bottom to protect the outflow from the sand, but for all intents and purposes, this is a sand-only bed.

Surface trickling - why not.  In that bed, it sand the only medium or is there a different medium underneath it?

Teresa - an interesing observation about the sand bed has been that surface trickling (allowing water to simply flow through the sand through a surface distribution grid) has had far better results than the original flood and drain type (filling it and allowing it to drain through a constricted outflow) method I started with.  As spring takes effect here and things actually start growing, I promise to post more updates.
